At the European Beer Star award ceremony in Nuremberg, Germany this week, our Co-Founder, President, and original Brewer David McCarthy accepted the Bronze Medal in the Franconian Smoke Beer category for Smōk. We are proud to represent our country as one of the 18 winning American breweries, but we are even more proud to accept a medal for our smoke beer mere kilometers from the global epicenter of smoke beers: Bamberg, Germany smōk.

Smōk has long been a labor of love for David, who became enamored with the unique flavor profile of smoke beers while visiting Bamberg as a student in German brewing school years ago. He set out to create a smoked maerzen-style lager that could hold its own next to the ones Bamberg was famous for. After years of trial and error, traveling back and forth between Bamberg and Healy, Alaska to compare his batches against the likes of smoke beers from Schlenkerla and Spezial, Smōk was born.
